Electric Type in Pokémon GO

Electric-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO: what Electric is strong against, weak to and resists, its weather boost, well-known examples and practical tips.

Electric has one of the narrowest weakness profiles in the game: only Ground-type moves are super effective against it, and Ground-type attacks deal heavy damage in return since there's no partial resistance to fall back on. On offense, Electric is a reliable answer to Water and Flying.

Electric type matchups

Electric's chart row is short: two types it beats, one it loses to, three it resists, and one (Ground) that shrugs its attacks off almost entirely. The multipliers follow the type chart: 1.6× for super effective, 0.625× for resisted, about 0.39× for the old immunities.

Electric resists

  • Electric — damage reduced to 0.625×
  • Flying — damage reduced to 0.625×
  • Steel — damage reduced to 0.625×

Weather boost

Rainy weather boosts Electric-types, sharing the slot with Water and Bug. That pairing is handy: Electric attackers are the usual answer to Water-type bosses, so on a rainy day both the boss and your counters may be boosted. The weather boosts page covers what a boost actually changes.

  • Zapdos
  • Magnezone

Practical GO tips

  • Electric-type attackers are the standard answer to Water and Flying-type raid bosses, including a number of Flying-type Legendaries.
  • A Ground-type counter completely turns the tables on an Electric-type Pokémon, so avoid sending one in against a known Ground-type Gym defender.
  • Electric-types resist Flying, so they can stand and trade with a Flying-type boss rather than just out-damage it.

Keep in mind that a dual-typed Pokémon changes the picture: an Electric/Steel Pokémon such as Magnezone has a very different set of weaknesses from a pure Electric-type, so check the full typing before assuming Ground is its only problem.

Against an Electric-type, Ground is the one super-effective option, and it comes with a bonus: Electric moves barely dent a Ground-type in return.

FAQ

Does Electric have any way to hurt a Ground-type?

Not with Electric-type moves, which land at only about 0.39×. Many Electric-types learn charged moves of other types, though, and it's the move's type that decides the damage, so check a Pokémon's moveset before writing it off.
