Ground Type in Pokémon GO

Ground-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO: what Ground is strong against, weak to and resists, its weather boost, well-known examples and practical tips.

Ground is one of the strongest offensive types in the game, hitting five types super effectively, and Electric-type moves do only around 0.39× to it in return. Its one real gap is Flying-types, which Ground-type moves barely touch (also ~0.39×) and which Ground doesn't resist.

Ground type matchups

Ground's row on the type chart has five 1.6× hits, one of the widest offensive spreads in the game, and its only real weaknesses are the three types that erode or freeze it.

CategoryTypes
Ground is strong against (1.6×)Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock, Steel
Ground is weak to (takes 1.6×)Water, Grass, Ice
Ground resistsElectric (~0.39×), Poison (0.625×), Rock (0.625×)

Weather boost

Sunny/Clear weather boosts Ground, with Fire and Grass. A clear day is prime time for Ground-type raiders, especially against Electric-, Fire- or Steel-type bosses; the weather boosts page covers every condition.

  • Flygon
  • Groudon
  • Rhydon

Practical GO tips

  • A Ground-type attacker is a strong pick against Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock and Steel-type raid bosses, and takes only ~0.39× from Electric-type attacks in return.
  • Ground-type moves do almost nothing to Flying-types (~0.39×), so pair a Ground-type attacker with a backup that can cover Flying-type targets.
  • Ground moves hit Electric/Steel Pokémon such as Magnezone, Fire/Rock and Rock/Steel Pokémon for 2.56×, so a Ground attacker is often the single most efficient pick against a Steel-type boss.

Many Ground-types are paired with Rock, which doubles up the Water and Grass weaknesses to 2.56×; that's why a Grass attacker works so well against Golem or Rhydon, and why you should check the second type before assuming a Ground-type is safe.

To beat a Ground-type, Water, Grass and Ice attackers all hit for 1.6×, and Grass has the added benefit of resisting Ground's attacks.

FAQ

Is Ground better than Electric against a Water-type?

No. Ground moves do neutral damage to Water-types while Water moves hit Ground for 1.6×, so it's a losing trade. Electric and Grass are the counters to Water; Ground is the pick for Electric, Fire, Poison, Rock and Steel bosses.
