Psychic Type in Pokémon GO

Psychic-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO: what Psychic is strong against, weak to and resists, its weather boost, well-known examples and practical tips.

Psychic-types hit Fighting and Poison hard, but their own attacks barely register on Dark-types (around 0.39×, Pokémon GO's version of the mainline immunity), and Dark, Ghost and Bug moves all hit them super effectively. Several of the game's most recognizable Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, including Mewtwo and Deoxys, are pure or partial Psychic-types.

Psychic type matchups

Psychic's lists on the type chart are short but sharp: two 1.6× targets, three weaknesses, two resistances, and one type (Dark) that Psychic attacks barely touch.

CategoryTypes
Psychic is strong against (1.6×)Fighting, Poison
Psychic is weak to (takes 1.6×)Bug, Ghost, Dark
Psychic resistsFighting (0.625×), Psychic (0.625×)

Weather boost

Psychic is boosted by Windy weather, sharing the slot with Flying and Dragon. Since several Psychic Legendaries have spent time in raids, a windy day can be a good one to take them on with boosted Psychic attackers of your own; the weather boosts page has the details.

Well-known Psychic-type Pokémon

  • Metagross

Practical GO tips

  • Psychic-type attackers are effective against Fighting and Poison-type raid bosses.
  • A Dark-type attacker is the classic answer to a Psychic-type: it hits for 1.6× and takes only ~0.39× from Psychic moves in return, which makes it a safe pick against a strong Psychic-type Gym defender.
  • Poison/Fighting Pokémon such as Toxicroak take 2.56× from Psychic moves, but a Poison/Dark Pokémon such as Drapion takes only ~0.39×, so always check the second type.

Several strong Psychic-types double as Steel-types (Metagross, Bronzong) or Fairy-types (Gardevoir), which removes or adds weaknesses; the table above describes the pure type only.

Against a Psychic-type, Dark, Ghost and Bug attackers all hit for 1.6×, with Dark the safest choice because Psychic moves barely damage it.

FAQ

Are Psychic-types good Gym defenders?

Their three weaknesses are the problem: Dark, Ghost and Bug attackers are all easy to find, and a Dark-type takes almost no damage from Psychic moves in return. Psychic-types are better used as attackers against Fighting and Poison bosses, where their often high attack stats show.
